Gotica Rotunda Sforza is a
fine calligraphic letter, a jewel of the Italian Renaissance, now presented as
digital font by Paulo Heitlinger. It was rendered after the Sforza Book of
Hours.
This Book of Hours ranks among the masterpieces of the
Renaissance in terms of colour, expressiveness and calligraphy.
The Italian Rotunda was a calligraphic script used for
ritual and ceremonial documents. Mediæval and even Renaissance scribes
used it for maximum readability in large missals (church songbooks).
Its large x-height ensured visibility for the many singers
who used one manuscript book.

It has not the angular letterforms that other Gothic scripts
show, reflecting a more spacious approach to writing.
The broken-round arcades of the minuscule are less stressed
verticality, and used lower and less-pointed arches than the Gothic style of
Germany, like the Textura.
Typeface designer Paulo Heitlinger rendered this Italian
Rotunda hand, a charateristic letterform of the incunable era.
